Pakistan Election to the UN Drug Commission with the Highest Votes

Pakistan has been elected for a four-year term on the commission. During the voting last Friday, highest number of votes among all competing countries from their respective regions fell to Pakistan.

CND is a drug control policy-making and decision-making body, which started under ECOSOC. The CND decides on the placement of drugs and words of international law. Membership will provide Pakistan with an avenue to contribute meaningfully to developing international drug policies, including drug trafficking routes and health issues, as well as transnational crime.

“The UN Commission also expresses its appreciation to ECOSOC for its solid support. It speaks to the extent to which other member states reposed confidence in Pakistan’s proactive role to combat illegal drugs and be a stakeholder in the global debate,” the statement said.

The statement concluded that Pakistan has always been proactive in disrupting the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and has taken strong measures to eliminate drug production and abuse.

The term of office for Pakistan on the commission should start in 2026 and will last until 2029. Pakistan has participated in various international fora in the drug field and has shown a desire for further cooperation, ensuring fairness and effectiveness in international drug control within the framework of the United Nations.
