The Ayub Agricultural Research Institute is developing more varieties of sesame because sesame is considered the best crop to combat climate change in Pakistan. Director General of AARI, Dr. Sajid Rehman, speaking to WealthPK, stated that the institute was working hard to create seed varieties with the potential to combat climate change. The director said sesame crops could be a good source of income for the farmers. Signifying the potential of sesame, he said, during the last one and a half years, the country has exported sesame worth $1.5 billion, which has led to improvements in forex reserves. He also highlighted that the Pakistan-China Free Trade Agreement is likely to increase exports of various agricultural products like sesame, chilli, rice, fruits, and peppers. The directors have also encouraged the agricultural scientists to boost the production of climate-resistant crops like sesame by improving cultivation techniques.

Pakistan Is Earning A Good Income From Exporting Sesame

Director General of AARI, Dr. Sajid Rehman, has highlighted that the cultivation area in the last two to three years has exceeded over one million acres. The reason is due to the increase in per-acre production, new sesame varieties, and effective marketing. It is a good sign for the country as it is earning a good amount of income by exporting sesame, fruits, vegetables, rice and other agricultural products. This year, Pakistan has earned $7 billion through these crops.

A farmer named Ali Raza with sesame cultivation experience told WealthPK that he had been cultivating sesame for many years but could not earn high profits. The farmer added that the potential of sesame against climate change is excellent, but it cannot be considered a cash crop. Talking to WealthPK, a fruit and vegetable exporter, Javed Kamal, stated that the Chinese companies are now showing more interest in the agriculture sector of Pakistan, which will surely boost the sector. The exporter also stated that both China and Pakistan were exchanging germplasm of various varieties, which include sesame, rice, cotton and other products.

Potential of Sesame

Dr. Ihsan from AARI’s Oilseeds Department highlighted that sesame seeds are rich in copper, iron, and calcium, which are good for bones and also help in relieving joint pain. Sesame seeds are also rich in high-quality protein and edible oil. Additionally, their oil is also used in soaps, medicines, and perfumes. Sesame is also significant for cattle and poultry feed. Sesame consumes less water as compared to cotton and rice. Not only this, but sesame also has potential health benefits. Consumption of sesame protects from heart diseases, arthritis, and diabetes.
