The Pakistani military leadership has announced that any attempt to provoke a situation similar to the chaos of May 9, 2023 will be met with a stern response, and the rule of law will be enforced. The commanders discussed the current security environment in Pakistan and decided to maintain a high level of operational readiness, the Inter-Services Public Relations statement said. The forum also emphasised the need for internal stability and said that any attempt to provoke trouble or create a situation like May 9 would be dealt with without hesitation or discrimination.

May 9, 2023, was mentioned in relation to the unrest that followed the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan when the protests included attacks on government property and military installations. In the current political environment in Pakistan, the anniversary-era reference was especially significant against the backdrop of the subsequent legal action against PTI leaders and supporters, which is extensive and continues to be so.

PTI Islamabad March Intensifies Political Tensions

The military’s warning comes days before the PTI’s planned march to Islamabad on October 4. The protest was originally scheduled for September 27 but was deferred, with PTI leaders saying the march would go ahead unless an accord came about through political engagement.

Meanwhile, formal talks have been opened between the federal government and PTI to ease political tensions. The first round was held on October 2, with both sides agreeing to continue talks, while the government sought cancellation of the proposed march and PTI put forward demands including better treatment for Imran Khan.

At the same time, political dialogue is moving ahead, and security preparedness is being strengthened, highlighting the significance of maintaining public order and allowing constitutional and political processes to proceed. The Islamabad administration has also sought an extension in the deployment of the Rangers, seeking extension of the services of 3,000 personnel for security duties beyond October 5.

The Corps Commanders’ Conference also discussed the broader security environment of Pakistan, including terrorism originating from Afghanistan. The military leadership reiterated Pakistan’s stated right to self-defence and endorsement of targeted action against militant threats emanating from across the western border.

The forum also reviewed operational preparedness and counter-terrorism measures including intelligence-based operations, modern technology, training and increased multi-domain integration. The military said the armed forces remained ready to defend Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security.

The conference reaffirmed Pakistan’s position on Jammu and Kashmir, besides expressing concerns on security and welcoming the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. The developments placed the latest internal-security warning within the broader agenda of counterterrorism, national defence and Pakistan’s strategic alliances.
