Lieutenant General Mohammed Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI). The new DG succeeds Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum and will assume command from 30th Sept onwards.

Lt Gen Asim Malik is currently serving as an Adjutant General at the general headquarters in Rawalpindi. The newly appointed chief has previously led the infantry brigade in Waziristan and the infantry division in Balochistan before being transferred to Rawalpindi.

Adding to that, he has also received the Sword of Honour during his course, and has served as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU). Also, he has been an instructor at Command and Staff College in Quetta.

Talking about his background, the lieutenant general is a graduate of Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies.

The appointment of the new ISI chief comes one month after the probe took an unexpected turn when former spy master DG Faiz Hameed was arrested after the agencies got tracks of his relationship with former PM and PTI leader Imran Khan.

On Aug 12, Pak military announced that General Hameed has been arrested due to multiple instances of violation of the Army Act  following his retirement in Dec 2022.

The army stated, “The process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated, and Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has been taken into military custody.”

The Pak military said that the action against the former spy chief was in line with the orders of the Supreme Court. The highest law authority called for an investigation in 2023 after a land development company named Top City filed a petition. The company had filed a complaint stating that Hameed and his brother had taken possession of various properties and even blackmailed the company’s owner.
