The Islamabad High Court issued an order to suspend prison sentences of 10 people who were convicted for taking part in the May 9th protests which occurred after Imran Khan’s arrest as Prime Minister. Justice Mohsin Kayani together with Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan allowed bail for the convicts by requiring each defendant to provide bonds worth PKR 25,000.
The anti-terrorism court issued these convicts five years and 10 months of imprisonment last November because they assaulted police officers and caused damage to a Faizabad Interchange checkpoint. The High Court issued its order because case documentation did not show convicts participated in the protest site. Document verification of five Afghan nationals appeared before the court thus leading the court to ask the deputy registrar to confirm their identification.
Several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders are now subject to non-bailable arrest warrants because an Anti-Terrorism Court charged Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz together with Fawad Chaudhry for their roles during the May 9 riots. Audacious supporters of the movement initiated destructive conflicts across Pakistan by attacking military sites including the Corps Commander residence in Lahore.
