Jailed Ex-PM Imran Khan Gains Global Attention with Nobel Nod
The jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan once again finds himself amid major global attention for his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. The erstwhile 72-year-old leader, being a staunch advocate for human rights and democracy, has been nominated by members of the Pakistan World Alliance (PWA)-an independent organization associated with Norway’s Partiet Sentrum.
Advocacy Roots of the Nomination
Partiet Sentrum announced on X that, along with someone with the legal authority to nominate, they have nominated Khan for the award.
“On behalf of Partiet Sentrum, it is with great pleasure that we announce that, in collaboration with someone with the right to nominate, we have nominated Imran Khan for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in promoting human rights and democracy in Pakistan,” read the statement.
This is his second nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Khan was further in the running in 2019 for the Peace Prize for what many saw as a diplomatic effort to ease tensions in South Asia, especially between Pakistan and India.
Nobel and Its Legal Conjunction with Khan
The Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations each year and subjects them to an exhaustive eight-month evaluation process before announcing the winner.
Khan, meanwhile, has legal hurdles. The founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI party has been jailed since August 2023. In January 2024, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of power, which he incessantly denies, calling them politically motivated.
The fourth major conviction against him pertained to the misuse of state gifts, leaking classified information, and unlawful marriage; although all prior ones were either suspended or overturned by courts, the latest judgment has gone on to aggravate already tense political situations in Pakistan.
Political Fallout and Remains Contentious
Khan’s demise began in April 2022, when he was ousted through a no-confidence vote. His supporters contend that the present imprisonment is a deliberate ploy to silence the most vociferous opposition leader in Pakistan.
