Filming for Emily in Paris Season 5 came to a sudden and heartbreaking halt after assistant director Diego Borella collapsed and died on set in Venice, Italy, on August 21, 2025.

The incident occurred during setup for the evening’s final scene at the historic Hotel Danieli around 7:00 p.m. Emergency medical personnel attempted CPR immediately, but Borella was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

Borella, a Venetian native and experienced creative professional, had been hired as a third assistant director for the Venice portion of the shoot. He had a rich artistic background, with training in Rome, London, and New York, and was also known for his work in visual arts and writing children’s stories.

While an official autopsy report is pending, sources close to the production say he likely suffered a sudden heart attack.

The cast and crew took a two-day pause out of respect following Borella’s death. Production resumed on August 23, with members of the team returning to work with “heavy hearts,” according to crew sources.

Paramount Television Studios released a statement calling Borella a “beloved and valued member” of the production and extended condolences to his family. Netflix confirmed that Season 5 will still premiere on December 18, 2025, as originally scheduled.
