Earthquake Tremors Shake Parts of Punjab, No Casualties Reported

A 4.8 magnitude scale earthquake hit several areas of Punjab on Thursday evoking a short-lived panic among the population. The NSMC officially reported the seismic activity which occurred 50km northwest of the town of Kharian and at a depth of 15km. Small earthquakes were felt in different areas causing people to rush out of their houses saying prayers, but there was no loss of lives or property.

This earthquake affected several districts including Gujrat, Jhelum, Nankana Sahib, Jalalpur Bhatia, Wazirabad, Shahkot, and Bhalwal. The residents felt actual ground movements which included rolling and this led to much panic and evacuation of structures. The timely reaction of the people of the concerned countries, and the lack of extensive infrastructural losses emphasized the preparedness of the population in the seismically active zones.

The current earthquake occurred in the wake of several quakes in recent months The most recent was the 4.5 magnitude Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in August, and a more powerful one 5.4magnitude that hit Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and KP on 29 August. Another measure to be recorded of the same nature was in July, a  4.7 magnitude that struck the Swat district depicts how geologically unstable the area is.
