Diesel Prices Expected to Rise as Pakistan Enters 2025

Pakistan’s fuel prices could go up at the start of the new year, with HSD, kerosene, and LDO to go up by Rs4-5 per litre for the first two weeks of the year 2025. The officials from Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) suggest that petrol prices may not change very much, in fact it could either increase or decrease at the Rs 1 per litre, however the other variants of fuel are expected to rise up to the changes observed in the international market.

The new change has come close on the heels of a mid-December cut when HSD was cut by Rs3.05 to Rs255.38 per litre. At the moment, one litre of petrol costs Rs 252.10 while diesel is slightly cheaper at Rs 243.80 per litre, though they attract nearly the same government tax of about Rs 76 per litre. Market analysts have also observed that rise in HSD prices poses a clear threat to inflation with the transport industry as well as the farming business likely to be affected.

The increase in the prices is linked to a slight increase of the international market prices while exchange rates have been pegged with no change on import premiums. In the current arrangement, the middle and lower-middle class, who use petrol for private transport may not feel the pinch, but the agricultural sector and transport business that rely on high-speed diesel, may have to dig deeper into their pockets.
