Yaum-i-Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is a gloomy day for Muslims worldwide. In Pakistan, processions are being taken out in connection with Yaum-i-Ashura to pay homage to Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and all other martyrs of Karbala. This day goes into the death of those great persons and the lesson it teaches.

However, the government has increased security to ensure the safety of people participating in the processions. The army has been deployed throughout the country. Drones are prohibited during the events. In Sindh Province alone, 59,000 cops are deployed for security cover during the processions.

Leaders Urge for Unity and Introspection

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued messages on this occasion. They asked the people to seek guidance from the martyrs of Karbala and take a lesson of perseverance against all hardships, and also to show unity, tolerance, and assistance to the weak.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar defined the philosophy of Imam Hussain as a guiding light for the entire humanity. The sacrifice that Imam Hussain AS made with his companions is the greatest story of standing up for truth, he said in his address. The leaders are encouraging people to apply these lessons to their daily lives and to work together to face the challenges Pakistan is currently facing.

Processions in Big Cities

The main procession in Lahore starts from the Nisar Haveli and terminates at Karbala Gamay Shah Imambargah. Scores of traffic officers have been assigned by the city to manage the crowds and make appropriate movement arrangements. Including more than 1,000 wardens, many senior officers were deputed to oversee the incumbency of arrangements.

The key procession in Karachi, starting from Nishtar Park and culminating at Hussainiya Iraniyan, Imam Bargah, chalks out a minute traffic plan circulated by the city authorities to facilitate people’s movements during the procession. Many roads will be closed down, and alternative routes have been suggested for people traveling in various parts of the city.

Traffic Management and Public Safety

Elaborated arrangements have been planned by both Lahore and Karachi regarding the management of traffic during the Ashura processions. Major roads, specifically the MA Jinnah Road, are to be closed in Karachi, while the public has been advised to move along specified routes. Heavy vehicles have also been disallowed from certain areas by the authorities to avert congestion.
