On 3rd November 2026, Pakistan successfully conducted the first flight test of the indigenously developed Faaz air-to-air missile. The weapon was test-fired from a JF-17 Thunder multirole combat aircraft, already a key part of the country’s air power.

Faaz Air-To-Air Missile Completes First Flight Test

The missile is fitted with an advanced terminal guidance system and is capable of engaging aerial targets at long ranges, ISPR said. The launch footage indicates the imaging infrared version, known as the Fa’az-IIR, which indicates a sophisticated seeker technology developed domestically.

The Third Major Missile Test In Less Than A Month.

This is the third major missile test in less than a month after October tests of the Fatah-2 ER and Fatah-IV ER surface-to-air systems. The trials taken as a whole suggest a steady and well-planned program rather than a one-off event.

The series is aimed at building defence self-reliance and reducing dependence on foreign procurement. Developing critical systems in-country gives Pakistan greater control over supply, maintenance and future upgrades, and helps develop local engineering expertise.

Self-Reliance And Strategic Assurance

Official statements did not disclose details of the missile’s top speed, range or payload. This level of discretion is typical for defence announcements, and there are reports of parallel development efforts, including the Fa’az-2 from Global Industrial and Defence Solutions.

Pakistan has previously attracted international comment about its missile capabilities, including rebuttals of concerns raised by US officials as unfounded. Recent milestones, including the Pakistan Navy’s ship-launched ballistic missile test and the Shaheen-II training launch, demonstrate capability across the air, land and sea domains.

Global trends provide context while other powers continue to invest in advanced systems, as evidenced by analysis of Russia’s Avangard hypersonic missile and reporting on the Black Sea Fleet commander’s claims. In this context, an expanding indigenous air-to-air capability enhances Pakistan’s credible, defensive deterrence and its status as a self-reliant defence partner.
