Kisan Bank Punjab has been announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as the province’s first Apna Kisan Bank, backed by PKR 17 billion in subsidised agricultural loans. The initiative is designed to support farmers cultivating approximately 5 million acres across Punjab.
Kisan Bank Punjab Launch Backed by PKR 17 Billion
The plan places affordable credit at the centre of agricultural policy, giving growers a formal source of finance for seeds, inputs and equipment. Access of that kind can ease dependence on informal lenders, who often charge higher costs.
Loan Slabs, Kisan Card and Wheat Support
The bank offers tiered financing. Loans of up to PKR 10 million carry zero markup, those up to PKR 30 million carry 2%, and those up to PKR 50 million carry 5%.
The Kisan Card has also been enhanced, with the DAP fertiliser loan limit rising to PKR 33,500 per acre, an increase of PKR 3,500. The broader scheme supports over one million small farmers.
Wheat support features in the package through a target support price of PKR 4,500 per maund. An allocation of PKR 70 billion is planned for farm mechanisation and local tractor production, along with new agro-parks and digitised procurement.
A Wider Wave of Modernisation Across Pakistan
Farm reform sits within a broader modernisation story. In education, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is modernising classrooms through virtual schooling, which shows how provinces are adopting new tools to serve citizens.
Sport offers a similar picture of confidence and change. Recent coverage includes the new social media rules shaping Pakistan cricket, the story behind Lahore’s quiet stands, the cultural impact of the Pakistan Super League and the nail-biting PSL 9 final in which Islamabad United ended a five-year wait.
Policy Priorities for Farm Finance
The central policy question is how subsidised credit can be delivered fairly and sustainably. Clear eligibility rules, digital applications and transparent reporting on who receives loans would help small farmers benefit alongside larger growers.
