PTI leaders in Shangla have reportedly gone into hiding following police raids and a crackdown on party workers. The action came after the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency status in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which President Asif Ali Zardari approved citing security concerns and rising militant attacks.

Law enforcement agencies carried out late-night raids on the houses, deras and suspected hideouts of party leaders and workers in the district. More than two dozen workers were taken into custody, while MPA Abdul Munim and other local figures reportedly disappeared from public view.

Section 144 and Wider Security Measures

Authorities imposed Section 144 in Shangla to ban public gatherings, with a heavier police presence and checkpoints at entry and exit points. The measures are intended to prevent unrest while the emergency arrangements settle in.

Similar detentions have taken place elsewhere in the province, including former chief minister Sohail Afridi, provincial president Junaid Akbar and Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati. The federal government maintains that the steps are linked to restoring law and order, as outlined in PTI Challenges Government To Impose Governor’s Rule In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Legal Safeguards and the Road to Normality

Pakistan’s constitutional framework provides checks on emergency powers. Parliament must approve the proclamation, and a petition challenging the measures has already been filed in the Peshawar High Court, giving all sides a lawful forum.
