The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has started the PTI long march 2026 to Islamabad after failing to reach a deal with the federal government over the weekend, and the movement was kicked off on October 4 by the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, and the provincial PTI president, Junaid Akbar Khan.
PTI March Starts After Negotiations Stall
The convoy left Gandi Chowk in Lakki Marwat after talks failed to resolve key differences between the PTI representatives and the federal government. The party has linked the movement to the demands of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and detained party supporters.
PTI representatives have demanded immediate access to Imran Khan and his wife, as well as a medical examination of the former prime minister by his personal doctors. The party has also called for the release of supporters detained during previous political activity.
Government And Opposition Stay Divided
Disagreements over access to Imran Khan and federal-provincial cooperation on counterterrorism and security operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reportedly derailed the talks. The talks failed to reach an agreement before the march started because of the unresolved issues.
The federal government has stated that protesters will not be permitted to enter Islamabad and has also placed restrictions around the capital’s government district, and the diverging positions have heightened the significance of upholding public order as the convoy progresses to the next phase.
Islamabad Movement Moves To Next Stage
On October 5, the convoy paused overnight in Karak, as organisers made further preparations for the onward journey. The march is scheduled to reach Khairabad on October 8, where the PTI leadership will make the announcement regarding the next phase of the movement.
The evolving situation is putting pressure on both sides of the political spectrum to keep talking while also dealing with security and public movement. Continued dialogue could continue to play a role in preventing disruption and ensuring political disagreement is worked out within established democratic and constitutional processes.
