Sahibzada Farhan has officially taken over as Pakistan’s T20I captain, replacing Salman Ali Agha ahead of the home series against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. Agha captained Pakistan during the 2026 T20 World Cup but has been omitted from the 15-member squad.
Sahibzada Farhan Takes Charge of the T20I Side
Farhan arrives in the role with recent leadership credentials, having guided a young Pakistan side to a silver medal at the Asian Games in Japan. That achievement gives the new captain a strong platform and reflects the selectors’ confidence in his ability to lead.
A Squad Built for the Next Cycle
Senior names such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan have been left out as selectors begin transitioning the team towards the 2028 T20 World Cup. The approach opens the door for fresh talent and gives emerging players a chance to establish themselves at international level.
Experience has not been abandoned, with Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan recalled to the squad. The blend of seasoned players and younger options should offer balance while the new captain builds his own leadership style, as outlined in Pakistan Names Squads For Sri Lanka T20Is And England-Sri Lanka ODI Tri-Series.
First Series Sets the Tone
The three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka begins on 9 October 2026 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, and home conditions and a supportive crowd offer an encouraging setting for a new captain to start his tenure.
Clear role definition, consistent selection and steady backing from the Pakistan Cricket Board would help the young group grow into a settled unit, and early results in Rawalpindi can build the momentum needed for the longer road towards 2028.
