The prime minister described the Indus Waters Treaty as a binding international agreement and said India’s decision to place it in abeyance lacks any legal basis. Pakistan has repeatedly stressed that respect for established treaties is central to regional trust and predictable relations.
Concern was also expressed over terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil, with an emphasis on the need for verifiable action from Afghanistan. Pakistan’s stance combines firmness on security with a continued readiness to engage constructively.
UN Reform and Pakistan’s Multilateral Standing
Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the Secretary-General’s UN80 Initiative and stressed that reforms must support developing countries and conflict prevention. Such priorities align with Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to a fair and effective multilateral system.
Guterres thanked Pakistan for its role in peacekeeping, multilateral engagement and diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation, and said that recognition strengthens Pakistan’s credibility as a responsible partner, as reflected in Shehbaz Warns UN That Any Threat To Makkah Or Madinah Would Cross A ‘Red Line’.
