US President Donald Trump stated at a campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, that a Trump Iran deal “isn’t really something that I want to do”, even as special envoy Steve Witkoff continues indirect negotiations. Trump added that Tehran is willing to offer anything to stop, and that the conflict will end very soon.
Trump praised Witkoff for progress in the discussions and compared his work to earlier diplomacy on the Gaza ceasefire. The remarks show that talks remain active despite the firm public tone from Washington.
Sticking Points Over the Nuclear Programme
Washington insists that any settlement must address Iran’s nuclear programme and uranium enrichment directly. A proposed seven-day interim arrangement, focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for sanctions relief and frozen assets, has been rejected.
The diplomatic track runs alongside a US military buildup and discussion among officials about possible renewed strikes. That combination keeps pressure on all sides to find a workable path.
Pakistan’s Constructive Diplomatic Position
Pakistan has remained engaged in regional diplomacy, with Field Marshal Asim Munir reported to have spoken with Trump before travelling to Tehran, as covered in Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir spoke to Trump ahead of Tehran visit. That contact places Islamabad close to the conversation at a sensitive moment.
Pakistan’s working relationships with Washington and Tehran give it credibility as a voice for restraint and dialogue, and a negotiated outcome would ease regional tensions and angst in the energy markets, and be good for Pakistan and its neighbours.
