Karachi Commuters Face Unauthorised Bus Fare Hikes Amid Rising Transport Costs

The daily Karachi bus fare hikes have risen among Karachi commuters as the private bus and mini bus operators are charging fares above the rates approved by the Sindh Regional Transport Authority. The hike in fares has affected students, office-goers and domestic workers, who rely on affordable public transport.

The official fare notification issued in April sets rates between Rs40 and Rs50 for journeys of up to 10 kilometres, Rs70 to Rs80 for distances up to 30 kilometres, and Rs110 to Rs120 for longer routes; however, recent reports indicate that several operators are charging passengers more without a new government notification approving the increases.

Fuel Costs Put Additional Pressure On Karachi Bus Fare Hikes

Transport operators have linked the fare increases to sharply higher diesel costs, arguing that operating expenses have become increasingly difficult to manage. Karachi Transport Ittehad president Haji Tawab Khan said the industry faced a substantial gap between revenue and fuel costs, with many buses reportedly being removed from service.

The transport sector’s difficulties have also created a broader challenge for Karachi’s public mobility system, and rising operating costs can reduce fleet availability, while fewer vehicles increase overcrowding and leave commuters with limited alternatives for reaching workplaces and educational institutions.

Public Transport Services Offer Some Relief On Karachi Bus Fare Hikes

Government-backed services have provided a more affordable alternative for many Karachi residents, with fares on the Green and Orange BRT lines and Peoples Red Bus Service remaining unchanged during the latest private-sector increases, and commuters have reportedly preferred these services because of comparatively lower costs and more comfortable travel conditions.

However, shortages in the Red Bus fleet have limited the ability of public services to absorb additional passengers. Strengthening fleet capacity, improving enforcement of approved fares and maintaining targeted support for transport operators could therefore help balance commuter affordability with the financial pressures facing Karachi’s transport sector.
