Focusing on foreign investment, PM Shehbaz Sharif met important Qatari businessmen on his recent two-day state visit to Doha. The visit comes after his Saudi Arabia trip where he managed to sign $600 million investment deals saw the Premier meeting with the QBA delegation headed by Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani. The principals’ meeting was specifically directed at identifying potential investment fields in Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure, as well as the financial sector.

Prime Minister Shehbaz had a detailed telephone conversation with their Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani with an emphasis on trade cooperation. The talks focused on such sectors of the Pakistani economy as priorities and opportunities for keener cooperation. The Prime Minister also had with the Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and savoured a dose of art at the ‘Manzar’ art gallery.

QBA delegation included key decision makers of the society such as CEOs of Al Mana Group and Blue Salon; the latter expressed keen interest in energy and infrastructure development projects of Pakistan. This positive reaction from the delegation suggested that there could be a sizeable investment in these core sectors that would be a first in the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and Qatar.

The Pakistani delegation consisted of members of the cabinet including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif reflecting the government’s attitude towards the attraction of foreign investment. The attendance of such high-level representatives suggested that the meeting was of sufficient importance to change the nature of bilateral economic relations.

The discussions led to some positive recommendations that aimed at social partnership in job generation, and innovative and sustainable development. Important organizations which participated in the business forum included Mannai Corporation and Deutsche Bank of Qatar approvingly interested in Pakistan’s economy especially in emerging sectors.
