954 PTI Workers Arrested in Islamabad Protest Crackdown

Pakistan has observed escalation in the situation with legal facials going on the aggressive in responding to the protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers in Islamabad. The capital city has become a stage of political turmoil; protesters are fighting the police, and the police are fighting protesters. IG of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi disclosed an operation and said that 954 protesters had been arrested within three days and this escalates the political stakes and rises concerns on civil liberties and political freedom.

The Islamabad Police have used a forceful approach to disperse the protesters and have arrested 610 protesters in one day. Speaking to Chief Commissioner Islamabad stressed that no one could just oppose the state’s power. New footage allegedly suggests the use of masks by armed protesters; the police acted aggressively. The operation has helped seize more than 200 automobiles and 39 firearms, such as Kalashnikovs and 12-bore firearms, to highlight the perceived danger to public security.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged caution; the UN is observing the worsening situation in Pakistan carefully. Five security personnel have been killed while at least 52 out of the 71 injured persons are policemen. He also discussed the problem of Afghan nationals and said that he will work to find out which Afghan national should stay in the federal capital and which should not, hence only the approved individuals will stay. It continues and demonstrates the multiple political context and potential security challenges of Pakistan.
