World Bank Green Lights $194M Aid to Education and Water Improvement Programs
World Bank Allocates $194 Million to Improve Education and Clean Water Access in Pakistan
The World Bank approved a package of $194 million to help Pakistan improve education services and access to clean drinking water, demonstrating a strong commitment to Pakistan. The investment will finance two main initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life of people living in some of the country’s poorest areas.
Education for Children Living in Rural Areas
The bulk of the investment – $110 million – is in the form of the Sindh Schooling and Learning Project to enhance the learning opportunities for children in rural Sindh. This encompasses enhancing educational facilities and teaching standards, as well as increasing the number of girls who attend school on a systematic basis. There are numerous children out of school in Pakistan, and this project is working with schools to increase children’s knowledge and access to schooling.
Providing Clean Water for Sustainable Development
The $84 million remaining will go towards the Punjab Rural Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project. The aim of the project is to provide access to clean drinking water and sanitation for approximately 2 million people living in rural Punjab. The project will also provide hygiene education to develop healthy communities. Najy Benhassine, the World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, noted that these projects represented a critical opportunity to improve the future of Pakistan’s people and health systems. If the groups responsible for him had strong support from the government and communities involved, the funds would have the potential to effect meaningful changes to people’s lives every day.
