whatsapp introduces offline translation for chats and channels
Meta adds an internet-independent translation tool to WhatsApp as its service features evolve. The feature currently available through Android beta tests brings us closer to making language barriers disappear when we talk with others.
As described by WABetaInfo, the translation functionality works through beta version 2.25 12.25. The tool currently works with Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian languages and translates messages instantly on user devices.
How the New Translation Feature Works in WhatsApp
Users can start translation services in multiple ways:
- Users can choose specific language packs for download.
- The system offers a single translation setup that handles various language detection and translation work.
- From the chat info screen, users can activate text translation with a simple switch.
- To translate a message instantly, users can press and hold any message, then tap the Translate option.
Privacy-First Approach in WhatsApp
Users have the freedom to translate messages from group chats or private discussions as well as WhatsApp channels in any direction.
By keeping translation work on user devices, WhatsApp stays true to its principle of protecting user privacy. Although users help WhatsApp improve translation accuracy, they send their feedback data without sharing the message content to Meta.
Despite the simpler language packs, WhatsApp provides better offline translation services than online platforms because they function independently of the internet.
