Sunil Chhetri is one of India’s  most talented footballers in the world. He has been playing for the Indian national team for years and is known for his dedication, leadership, skills and goal-scoring ability. His journey from a young boy playing football on the streets to becoming a national legend is truly inspiring.

Early Life of Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri was born on August 3, 1984, in Secunderabad, India. His father was in the Indian Army  and played football for the army team in india. His mother was also a footballer and played for Nepal’s women’s team. Growing up in a sports-loving family, Chhetri developed a strong passion for football in the world.

As a child, he played football in local tournaments at school. His talent was clear from a young age, and he worked hard to improve his football game.

Club Career of Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri started his best football journey in 2002 when he joined Mohun Bagan, one of India’s top football clubs. He then played for JCT, where he scored 21 goals in three seasons. His legendary performances made him one of India’s top strikers.

His talent took him outside India as well:

In 2010, he became the first Indian footballer to play in Major League Soccer (MLS) when he joined Kansas City Wizards in the United States.

In 2012, he signed with Sporting Clube de Portugal B, a Portuguese club.

He returned back to India & became the star of Bengaluru FC, leading them to many victories.

International Career of Chhetri 

Chhetri made his India national team debut in 2005. Over the years, he became India’s highest goal scorer, with over 90 international goals. Some of his biggest achievements include:

Winning the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008.

Leading India to multiple SAFF Championship titles.

Becoming one of the top three highest international goal scorers alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the world.

In June 2024, he retired from international football.

Sunnil Chhetri’s passion for football has inspired millions. His appeal to fans in 2018 led to packed stadiums. He has received multiple awards, including:

Padma Shri (2019)

Arjuna Award (2011).

He has received multiple awards from many international tournaments.
