As the first match of the T20 series between Pakistan and Zimbabwe enters its final innings, Pakistani spinner Sufiyan Muqeem sets new records during the second T20I. This was a record as the first Pakistani and only the fourth bowler among the full member nations who have taken five plus wickets with an economy rate of less than five. During the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Muqeem bowled an economical spell of 5 for 3 in 2.4 overs which would be known in the history of T20I cricket.
Muqeem is among the few bowlers who became part of the list of those players who took 5 wickets within an allowance of five runs in a T20I match. Only two bowlers had achieved this before the end of that year, with Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka being the first to achieve this feat against New Zealand in 2014. Rashid Khan did the same for Afghanistan in 2017 by taking 5 for 3 to destroy Ireland’s batting order. The only pacer in this list is Bhuvneshwar Kumar who achieved the figure of 5 for 4 in the Asia Cup held in 2022 against Afghanistan.
Along with erasing Zimbabwe’s batting line-up, Muqeem also made an entry into record books and topped the record set by Umar Gul in T20Is for the best bowling figures by a Pakistani bowler. Gul, who retired from international T20I cricket with a total of 85 wickets in 60 matches, had taken five wickets for six runs twice before. Muqeem scored 65 runs on his debut T20I series only which paved the way for Pakistan’s great future for the national cricket team.
