Net Metering Policy Update in Pakistan
Pakistan’s net metering framework has shifted toward a net billing system, changing how solar users are compensated for surplus electricity.
Earlier, excess solar units exported to the grid were adjusted at nearly a 1:1 ratio against imported electricity.
Under the updated net billing structure, exported electricity is now purchased by DISCOs at a reduced rate of around PKR 11 per unit.
This means homeowners earn less for extra electricity sent back to the grid, making system sizing more important than before.

Due to the new policy, solar users are now advised to focus on self-consumption rather than overproduction.
Instead of installing oversized systems to export excess electricity, many households are opting for balanced setups that cover daytime usage directly.
