Simona Halep Announces Retirement from Tennis

At 33 years old Simona Halep made it known she would no longer compete in tennis as a professional. After a first-round loss against Lucia Bronzetti at Transylvania Open, Halep declared her tennis retirement. Halep decided to retire shortly after finishing her doping suspension which had first led to a four-year ban but later decreased to nine months through appeal.

Halep returned to tennis after her break but faced numerous knee and shoulder issues that let her play a total of seven matches and win one of them. After the match she told her fans about her retirement decision stating that tennis physically took too much out of her. She feels glad and unhappy simultaneously knowing her spirit remains at ease. After becoming World No. 1 and winning Grand Slams she accomplished every tennis goal she set for herself.

Halep achieved 24 WTA singles championships plus the 2018 French Open title and 2019 Wimbledon championship. Through her career she earned $40 million in prize money while creating a strong example of dedicated tennis playing for women.
