(C) The Express Tribune, pti postpones islamabad rally amid security concerns
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has decided to postpone its Islamabad public gathering. PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan and Azam Swati relayed this decision in a conference to the press, adding that the instructions had been made by the founder of PTI, Imran Khan. The rally, which is scheduled for today, shall now be held on 8 September.
The PTI leader, Azam Swati, asked all PTI supporters who were traveling towards Islamabad to go back home. This request came right from Imran Khan. The Islamabad administration has agreed to the new date and even gave permission for the September 8 rally. They told the PTI to make sure nobody says anything against the country or religion during the event.
Tense Political Atmosphere and Security Measures
The political situation in Islamabad is very tense at the moment. Though the PTI announced the rally, permission for it was taken back by the city government late last night. This resulted in increased security all over Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi.
Big containers have been placed on the roads to block the way to the Red Zone, a vital area in Islamabad. Stringent security measures are in place in both cities. Only government workers can enter the Red Zone by showing their office cards.
Traffic Problems and Cricket Match
Making matters worse, a cricket match between Pakistan and Bangladesh is being played in Rawalpindi. For the safety of the players and the public coming to watch the match, the road adjacent to the cricket stadium has been sealed off to the general traffic.
Due to all these security measures, schools and colleges in Islamabad have been closed today.
Update at Key Points
At Lahore’s Ravi Toll Plaza, the road to Islamabad has been closed. Cars are being sent to other roads instead. The Inspector-General of Police in Lahore has urged people to find out which roads were open before they travel. People can contact the helpline number 15 for assistance and queries.
At another place in Lahore, Thokar Niaz Baig, a lot of police personnel reached where some ladies from PTI were sitting to proceed towards the Lahore jalsa.
The situation at hand exemplifies how tense things are in Pakistan at this moment. In other words, the current political happenings are causing much disruption in daily life and stringent security measures in major cities.
