Pakistan Supreme Court has significantly altered Punjab’s political dynamics with its historic ruling. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) gained 27 reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly , giving a big setback to the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its allies.
PML-N’s Position Weakened
PML-N’s strength and position in Punjab Assembly has decreased to the count of 205 seats, after losing 27 seats to PTI. The allies of the ruling party also faced loss with PPP holding 14 seats, PML-Q 10 and IPP falling at six.
PTI’s Rising Influence
PTI and its ally Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen now hold 132 seats after the addition of 27 seats, which appreciably boosted the party’s position and influence in the assembly.
Celebrations and Criticism
The leader of opposition Malik Ahmad Khan Bachar welcomed the supreme court verdict announcing PTI’s strength at 140 members. A wave of celebration started among PTI supporters, with many demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the demand of former PM Imran Khan’s release once again ignited the political sphere.
This verdict by the Supreme Court has definitely reshaped the political scene of Punjab, enhancing PTI’s position which automatically challenged the ruling alliance.
