The Pakistan People’s Party PPP has expressed its clear-cut opposition to the Tax Amendment Bill 2024 and PPP’s senior most member and MNA Mirza Ikhtiar Baig declared it when the government initiated with its stringent measures against the non-filers. The bill under consideration has already been passed by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue; it prescribes measures, which have no precedence in Pakistan such as account freeze and restrictions on transfer of properties for non-filers of tax returns.
In his detailed statement, Baig disapproved the government stand and recommended that the bill should be debated in details in the Finance and Revenue Committee of the National Assembly. However, the Federal Board of Revenue has already started actions by sending notices to 169 thousand influential persons to increase the tax base.
At the same time, Baig also pointed out key problems of the IT industry in Pakistan, stating that there are 22 IT companies that left Pakistan due to lack of proper Internet facilities. He pointed out that while major markets are moving to the next generation of the technology, 5G, Pakistan isstill struggling with the introduction of 4G, and called upon the government to wake up to the cause to resuscitate the sector.
