The US power minister Sardar Awais Leghari tells foreign funding partners all talks with power companies follow clear principles of openness and impartiality.
During his Power Sector International Development Partners meeting the minister explained all government power sector improvements. A network of World Bank officials headed by Najy Benhassine gathered representatives from the IMF, ADB, IFC, KFW, the German Embassy, FCOD, UNDP, and AIIB.
Laghari explained that open communication helped reduce 7000 MW from a planned 17000 MW expansion which saved valuable resources. His proposed changes consisted of switching from Take or Pay to Take and Pay agreements plus phasing out plants using furnace oil and using local coal instead of imported coal.
The minister suggested dividing the National Transmission & Despatch Company into two standalone organizations plus creating special support programs for Special Economic Zones. The new plan includes terminating debt cycles while inspecting electricity price benefits and solar fees plus selling utility companies alongside improving DISCO board leadership.
The country’s foreign allies gave their approval to power changes by promising assistance while Pakistan built market rates and developed its industrial sector.
