Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his “unwavering” support for the Kashmiri people on Wednesday saying that Pakistan wants to use dialogue to settle all issues including Kashmir with India.
On the occasion of “Kashmir Solidarity Day,” an annual Pakistani event to demonstrate solidarity for the Kashmiris, Sharif made the statement at a special session of the Legislative Assembly of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Muzaffarabad.
“We want all issues including Kashmir, to be resolved through talks,” Sharif said.
“India should come out of the thinking of August 5, 2019, and fulfil promises made to the UN and launch a dialogue,” he said, referring to the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.
As stated in the 1999 Lahore Declaration which was decided upon during the visit of then-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Pakistan, Prime Minister Sharif stated that dialogue was the only path ahead for both India and Pakistan.
India has stated time and time again that it wants to have normal neighborly ties with Pakistan in a setting free from violence, hatred and terror.
The Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh “was, is and shall forever” remain an essential part of India, the government has consistently assured Pakistan. When India revoked Article 370, relations between the two nations fell apart.
In addition, Sharif charged India with accumulating weaponry claiming that such a move would not result in peace or alter the lot of the people in this area. He advised India to use wisdom, stating that peace was the path to advancement.
“Pakistan will continue to offer its unwavering moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people till the realization of their right to self-determination,” he said.
The international community was also urged by Prime Minister Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari to persuade India to let the Kashmiri people “freely determine their future for lasting peace in the region.”
The Pakistan Armed Forces, the Service Chiefs and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee also reiterated their support for the Kashmiri people.
Pakistan is the ultimate destination for Kashmiris, according to PoK “Prime Minister” Anwarul Haq, who also stated that regional peace would not be achievable until the Kashmir dispute was settled.
