pcb faces huge loss after champions trophy 2025, spends ₹869 crore
The Pakistan Cricket Board lost more than 700 million rupees when it held the Champions Trophy 2025. All the hype behind the tournament failed to generate profits for the PCB because it hosted their first world cricket tournament in three decades. PCB used PKR 18 billion (around $58 million) to improve facilities at Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi venues. Raising funds through venue upgrades consumed 50% more than their initial budget to refurbish the facilities.
The PCB spent $40 million in tournament readiness before launching its stadium projects. With the money they put into tournament preparation the board obtained $6 million from different event activities. These situations caused significant financial loss of $85 million for the organization. Only one game took place between Pakistan and New Zealand on home turf at Lahore during all tourney matches. Three scheduled Super Eights matches had to be postponed which made the PCB organization bear a double financial strain before the tournament began.
The PCB has taken budget reductions as its main strategy to handle financial difficulties. The PCB decreased its top-level domestic T20 players’ fees by 90% and reduced second-string player payments by 87.5%. The organization made players live in low-cost hotel accommodations instead of their usual luxury rooms. The PCB board keeps receiving their regular salaries when the organization has not enough money.
The PCB introduced new regulations and cut cricket match payment rates for resident players from ₹40,000 to ₹30,000. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi got involved to review the decision after it provoked strong reactions.
