People of Masafer Yatta celebrate No Other Land’s Oscar victory believing it will have a worldwide impact on their political situation. Both Palestinian journalist Basel Adra and Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham delivered documentary content that earned them the Best Documentary Oscar win. Through Adra’s work, the film tracks Israeli military strikes on Palestinian houses and lands in Masafer Yatta.

Watching the ceremony brought strong emotions to everyone including Salem who stayed up all night ahead of his brother Adra. He felt immense delight from such unexpected news. After viewers watched the film the Adra family endured hazardous events such as their car getting stoned by settlers and their house being ransacked by Israeli soldiers.

Since the 1980s Israel established Masafer Yatta as a military training ground and demanded all Arab Bedouin residents to leave the area. In 2022 the Israel Supreme Court approved the expulsion plan and since then the demolition activities have increased significantly. According to Salem Adra, he believes Israel will order the Palestinian residents out without warning. Israeli military personnel destroyed a Palestinian family’s outbuilding within the last seven days at their neighboring village.

Jewish settlers continue establishing new settlements across the area which blocks Palestinian access more than before. The shepherd Raed al-Hamamdeh explains that Jewish settlers harm his herd while drones force his livestock away. “We can’t go far. The area was the limit of his movement he showed by pointing at a destroyed house.”

The film In Israel, No Other Land earns popularity while its two directors experience negative reactions from society. People criticized Abraham in his Berlin speech for omitting Hamas’s October 7 attacks from his speech about Israel’s reaction to the Palestinian conflict.
