pakistan gets top role in un counter terrorism committee
Pakistan Named as Vice-Chair of the UN Security Council
Pakistan has been made to provide support to the United Nations Security Council‘s Counter-Terrorism Committee as a vice chair which is a huge diplomatic gain for Pakistan. The committee was formed by the UN in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks and is a way for the UN to consult nation-states, provide information, and monitor compliance by nation-states with anti-terrorism regulations and efforts to deal with terrorist groups. Pakistan was also elected to chair the UNSC Committee that was established by Resolution 1988 (2011), which monitors sanctions against the Afghan Taliban. Pakistan was also elected co-chair of the new Informal Working Group on Documentation and will support the new Working Group on Sanctions.
These appointments place Pakistan at the center of some of the most important discussions taking place in the UN system.
In a statement, Pakistan’s UN Mission called these appointments a “significant diplomatic development,” and stated that this appointment enables Pakistan to fulfill its commitment to global peace and counter-terrorism operations. Pakistan commenced its 2-year term as a non-permanent member at the UNSC, as of January 1, 2023. This is Pakistan’s 8th stint on the Security Council, and Pakistan will take over as the Council’s president in July – which is an excellent opportunity to influence global policy, These appointments also create some evidence of Pakistan’s international acknowledgment of its role in countering terrorism and compliance with the UN Charter.
