Pakistan has officially restored the standard motorway and highway speed limits, reversing earlier restrictions that were introduced as part of temporary fuel-saving measures under the Pakistan Motorway Speed Limit policy. The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) has now reinstated the previous maximum speeds for different categories of vehicles across the country.
The updated rules apply to all major motorways, including M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4, M-5, M-9, and other national highway networks under federal control.
Updated Speed Limits for Motorways
Under the restored guidelines, light transport vehicles, including cars and SUVs, are once again allowed to travel at higher speeds on motorways.
The revised limits are:
- Cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTV): 120 km/h
- Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV) and Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV): 110 km/h
These limits apply across standard motorway sections unless otherwise signposted by NHMP authorities.
The restoration brings back the earlier driving framework that many motorists were already familiar with before the temporary reduction phase.
Speed Limits on National Highways
On national highways, different limits continue to apply based on vehicle category. The updated structure is:
- Cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTV): 100 km/h
- Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV): 90 km/h
These limits are enforced on major intercity routes such as the GT Road (N-5) and other provincial highway networks where NHMP jurisdiction applies.
Why Speed Limits Matter on Motorways
Motorway speed regulations are designed not only for traffic flow but also for road safety and fuel efficiency. NHMP regularly adjusts enforcement policies based on traffic conditions, accident data, and national energy considerations.
Even though higher limits have been restored, authorities continue to stress lane discipline, overtaking rules, and safe driving practices, especially during peak travel hours and holiday seasons.
What Drivers Should Keep in Mind
Motorists planning long-distance travel are advised to check real-time advisories before starting their journey. NHMP frequently updates route conditions due to weather, construction work, and traffic flow changes.
Drivers should also ensure:
- Vehicle condition is suitable for high-speed travel
- Lane discipline is strictly followed
- Speed cameras and patrol checks are observed
- Rest areas are used during long trips to avoid fatigue
Final Update for Travelers
With the restoration of the previous motorway speed limits, travel times between major cities may reduce again, especially on routes like Lahore–Islamabad (M-2) and Lahore–Multan (M-3).
However, compliance with NHMP regulations remains essential, as enforcement through speed monitoring systems continues across all major highways and motorways in Pakistan.
