Sindh Announces Its First Official Biopic Of Icon Abdul Sattar Edhi
The Government of Sindh has announced that it will be producing the first official biopic based on the life of Abdul Sattar Edhi. Edhi is one of Pakistan’s most beloved institutions. Known for his limitless compassion and contributions to society, Edhi will now be recognized on the big screen, and they will tell his incredible story of service and humility.
Who was Abdul Sattar Edhi?
Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in British India in 1928 and migrated to Pakistan after Partition. Edhi’s humanitarian journey began as a child, when he first learned compassion while taking care of his sick mother. Edhi opened his first small medical dispensary in Karachi in 1951 with only state funding and
limited resources. This humble, small medical dispensary would later develop into the Edhi Foundation,
The largest welfare organization in Pakistan.
The Edhi Foundation, which is an empire of compassion, consists of:
Over 1,800 ambulances make it the world’s largest fleet of volunteers providing a service 24/7.
Established orphanages, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, clinics, and rehabilitation centers.
Over 20,000 children that Edhi adopted and over 200,000 deceased individuals that have been buried with dignity, without anyone claiming them.
All funded by private donations and volunteers, Edhi himself did not take a salary.
A Legacy of Humility and Universal Love
Edhi was known as the “Angel of Mercy” and even “Pakistan’s Mother Teresa” for his unconditional love for other people, regardless of religion, race, or social status. He lived a very modest life, wearing simple clothes, living in a small two-room flat next to headquarters, avoiding attention, and not accepting funding from foreigners or governments.
Why a Biopic Now?
The government decision to make an official biopic speaks to the desire to:
- Preserve Edhi’s legacy for future generations of Pakistanis and people throughout the world.
- Share a story of kindness and selfless service in times of turmoil.
- Motivate subsequent leaders and philanthropists to be humanistic and brave in decision-making.
