nepra approves rs7.5 per unit increase in electricity tariff from march

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given the Green Light for a Significant hike in Electricity Prices by Rs7.5 Per Unit. This increase Part of the Fuel Price adjustment (FCA) will burden Consumers across the Board excluding lifeline Consumers and those Under K-Electric.

NEPRA’s approval means that Starting from March 2024 Consumers will Bear the Brunt of this Rise in Electricity Costs, amounting to an additional Rs66 Billion Collectively.

The Decision came after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) Requested NEPRA to increase Electricity rates by Rs7.13/Unit due to fuel Price adjustments. CPPA argued that in January 2024 a Significant Portion of Power Generation came from Hydropower Coal-fired, Natural Gas and Nuclear Plants.

This isn’t the first time Consumers have faced such an increase. Previously NEPRA raised the Electricity tariff by Rs5.63 Per unit in December 2023 Citing Fuel Monthly adjustments.

While this move is aimed at addressing the Rising Costs of Power Generation it adds to the financial Burden already faced by Consumers. The Hike in Electricity Prices will affect households, Businesses and industries, Potentially leading to Higher Operational costs and inflationary Pressures.

Consumers are likely to feel the Pinch of this increase Especially amid already Challenging Economic Conditions. The additional Expense on Electricity Bills could strain Household Budgets and impact discretionary Spending.
