Militants Abduct 16 Miners in Northwest Pakistan Due to Regional Tensions

Recently, in the Khyber Agency of northwestern Pakistan, insurgents stopped and abducted 16 employees working at mines connected to the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. The attack happened in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province; the attackers also burnt the vehicle carrying the workers, said the police officer, Mohammad Ijaz. Even though the mining project is being linked to the Atomic Energy Commission, the officials ascertained that the kidnapped workers were not directly employed by the Atomic Energy Commission.

However, an important event happened in the troubled Kurram district where after the three months blockade hundreds of besieged residents received aid convoys. The area was inaccessible because of a severe escalation of Shiite/Sunni tribal violence that left 130 people dead.

The spokesman for the provincial government of Muhammad Ali Saif agreed that trucks with food supplies, medicines, and tents have arrived in the region given a ceasefire recently negotiated. The development is a key step to ending the sectarian violence besetting the country and the surrounding area, especially after last November’s attack that left 31 people, the majority of them Shiite Muslims killed over a piece of land.
