Microsoft ended Skype operations on May 5 following its 21-year digital communication breakthrough. A video calling platform that revolutionized worldwide communication has officially finished its last video session.

Microsoft implemented this decision under its company-wide communication consolidation plan. Jeff Teper from Microsoft’s Collaborative Apps division pointed out how Skype delivered quantum leaps to communication before the company decided to consolidate free platforms.

Users can enter Microsoft Teams Free with their previous Skype login information. Users receive automated notifications when most of their contacts together with their chat history get transferred to the new platform.

Not all data will transfer to Teams, including:

  • Conversations between Skype and Teams work accounts
  • Skype to Skype for Business chat history
  • Self-chat history
  • Private conversation data
  • Copilot and bot content

Active users who choose not to migrate their data can export Skype data yet their data will be permanently deleted after January 2026 for accounts with no recent activity. Microsoft invested $8.5 billion to acquire Skype during 2011 before they fully incorporated it into their communication network.
