The first Electric taxi scheme was launched in Punjab by Maryam Nawaz, and this is a big step towards green transportation and job creation in Punjab. The initiative will be introduced on February 26, 2026, and it will be implemented with 1,100 electric taxis in the city of Lahore at first. The program will minimise carbon emissions, modernise the public transport and generate self-employment for young people and low-income citizens.

Within the scheme, the applicants will have an opportunity to take a zero-interest instalment scheme of five years, and the government will bear the financing costs. Male drivers are offered 50% subsidy on the down payment, and female drivers a 60% subsidy, with a 30 per cent quota being allocated to female drivers. There are sophisticated safety measures like GPS positioning, panic buttons, and smart meters, and a range of 250-300 km of driving range on a single charge.
