maryam nawaz elected as first female chief minister of punjab with 220 votes
In a historic moment for Punjab, Maryam Nawaz has become the first female Chief Minister of the province in Pakistan. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader took the oath of office on Monday, securing 220 votes in her favor.
The proceedings, however, faced a boycott by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who opposed Maryam Nawaz’s candidacy. Her opponent from SIC, Rana Aftab Ahmad, received zero votes due to the boycott.
The oath was a ceremony administered by Punjab Governor, Balighur Rehman. In this Ceremony there was the presence of Notable political figures which included former Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif along with Hamza Shahbaz.

Maryam Nawaz’s entry into parliamentary politics occurred on February 23 when she was sworn in as a member of the Punjab Assembly. This legislative body had previously elected her father and uncle, Shehbaz Sharif, as chief ministers. Her victory in the February 8 general elections from Lahore-XV constituency paved the way for her role as the Chief Minister. Notably, she also won from NA-119 but later withdrew from the National Assembly seat.

Maryam Nawaz played an important role in her family’s charitable organizations and political values. She holds the position of chairperson at the Sharif Trust, Sharif Medical City and Sharif Education Institutes,. which shows her dedication to philanthropy and community service.
