EIU Names Karachi Among World’s Least Livable Cities in 2025
Karachi has for yet another time gone close to the bottom of the Global Livability Index in the year 2025, at 169, making it the 4th least livable city in the world. Issues concerning living in 173 major cities across the globe were studied while considering crucial parameters like health care, education, infrastructure, stability, and culture. Unfortunately, the most populous city of Pakistan remains tormented by issues that make life unbearable for many of Karachi’s residents.
What Caused Karachi to Take a Dive?
The index showed Karachi doing badly in several key areas.
- Infrastructure: Infrastructure-wise, Karachi appears to lack everything roads, transport, and basic facilities somewhat impeding daily commuting and accessing essential services.
- Insecurity and Stability: The report indicates poor security conditions and a persistent state of political instability in Karachi, undermining foreign investment and tourism in return.
- Healthcare and Education: The very public hospitals and public schools that Karachi relies on are critically underfunded, and, this is a major contributing factor to the weak score.
This year’s report also stated that Damascus (Syria) was the worst city overall and placed first in the bottom rankings of the city index, Tripoli (Libya) followed closely behind in second last place, and Algiers (Algeria) was in third place. Karachi placed near the bottom in the index ahead of Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea).
What Is the Global Livability Index?
The Global Livability Index is reviewed annually by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The index considers cities in settings across five key categories:
