indian jeweler arrested in belgium over $1.8bn bank fraud
The Indian government requested Belgian police to detain their billionaire jeweler, Mehul Choksi. After leaving India in 2018, Choksi faced arrest because Indian authorities needed him for an investigation into Punjab National Bank fraud.
Vijay Aggarwal stated to BBC on Saturday that authorities arrested Mehul Choksi, followed by his plans to challenge their decision to detain him. The defense lawyers fight against moving Choksi because he deserves healthcare, and police arrested him because of suspect motives.
The Indian authorities accuse Choksi and his nephew, Nirav Modi, of cheating Punjab National Bank out of $1.8 billion. Modi is being held in a London jail before Indian authorities will take him into custody.
Before the scandal, both men had become successful diamond traders. Gitanjali Gems, under Choksi management, operated around 4,000 stores throughout India. Following his departure from India, he acquired Antiguan citizenship.
