IHC Hearing on X Closure and internet Content Threatens National Security

The Ministry of Interior recently informed the Islamabad High Court about a concerning issue regarding the internet. They said that the content uploaded on the internet poses a threat to Pakistan’s National security. This statement was made during a hearing Regarding the closure of X which is previously known as Twitter. Twitter which has been down in Pakistan for more than a Month.

During the hearing, the Interior Ministry’s joint secretary presented a report to Chief Justice Aamer Farooq. The court inquired if there was any formal written communication regarding the closure of X. They talk about the importance of proper Documentation instead of Verbal Statements.

The Chief Justice was not satisfied with the presented report and showed dissatisfaction. He asks them for concrete Evidence of the alleged threat to National SSecurity. He pointed out that the closure of X  Twitter was based on a Report from the Intelligence Bureau (IB). But it lacked substantial reasons. Which was found concerning by court. 

Justice Farooq requested the joint secretary to provide any relevant court verdicts on similar matters. The court also scheduled another hearing.  The court summoned the interior Secretary for further Clarification.

The Chief Justice said it’s important for institutions to be open and responsible. He also said the recent elections shouldn’t make this issue last longer than it needs to. He wants to solve it soon.

The joint secretary asked the court not to call important people to the hearing. Instead, they wanted more time to talk about the problem. The hearing showed how important it is to make decisions based on evidence and to be clear about what’s happening, especially when it comes to national security. The court wants everything to be recorded properly and for people to take responsibility for their actions. This shows that the court is dedicated to being fair and protecting people’s basic rights.
