
People of China are suffering from the Human Metapneumovirus virus five years after COVID-19. There are reports of hospital overcrowding and the virus with a higher prevalence during the winter and early spring which is similar to the flu but might worsen to become severe.
Symptoms of HMPV are cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath. The virus is transmittance through the act of coughing, sneezing, and personal contact. The incubation period is between 3-6 days while the disease duration depends on the level of infection. Infants, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems are prone to other related illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and ear infections.
To prevent HMPV, follow these tips:
- One should take a shower with soap and water often.
- You should especially make sure that you cover your mouth and nose when you are coughing or sneezing.
- Wear a mask in crowded places and stay away from people who are sick.
- Do not use hands that have not been washed to touch your face.
- Isolate yourself if unwell.
Till date, there is no antiviral medication or vaccine that can be prescribed for HMPV treatment. Sanitation and hygiene are important and one should avoid getting easily infected by any pathogen.
