A stunning spell of seam bowling from Shahin Shah Afridi led Pakistan to an 81-run victory over South Africa in the second match of the three-match series at Newlands on Thursday.
With the win, Pakistan secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, ensuring the series is wrapped up with one match remaining before the final in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The South Africans made a surprising decision to bowl first on a pitch known for the difficulty of chasing under floodlights. Pakistan took full advantage and scored 329 all out.
Captain Mohammad Rizwan led the innings with 80 off 82 balls, while Kamran Ghulam’s 63 off just 32 deliveries gave Pakistan the necessary momentum.
Babar Azam contributed 73 off 95 balls, and the team capitalised on South Africa’s poor fielding, dropping many balls and struggling to maintain accuracy.
In reply, South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen fought back with a solid 97 off 74 balls, but his efforts were in vain as Pakistan restricted the hosts to 248 in just 43.1 overs.
With this win, Babar Azam made history, surpassing MS Dhoni’s record for the most number of fifties scored against Senegal, according to Sports Kedah.
Babar’s fifty was his 39th, surpassing Dhoni’s record of 38 fifties in all formats against South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.
Babar Azam, who resigned as Pakistan captain after their World Cup exit in the ODI World Cup, has played more than 300 matches for the national team in all formats. During his career, he amassed more than 14,000 runs, including 31 centuries and 95 half centuries.
