will pucovski retires at 27 following concussion struggles
At 27 years old, Will Pucovski decided to stop playing cricket at all levels due to persistent concussion problems. On Tuesday he disclosed his decision through Melbourne radio station SEN. he said, “I will never return to cricket anymore. The situation has proven very hard to handle no matter how basic you try to explain it.”
After dominating first-class cricket from his youth, Australian cricket fans saw Will Pucovski as someone who would play many Tests for his country. His playing career lasted one Test match against India in 2021 because head injuries blocked further participation.
He sustained a new concussion in March 2024 when Riley Meredith of Tasmania hit him during a Sheffield Shield game. His experience from that concussion ended his professional career as the symptoms lasted longer than any previous incident.
“The last concussion I received two months ago made it hard for me to work and limited how far I could walk through my house”, according to Pucovski. “The difficult experience lasted beyond several months and created lasting problems for me”.
Doctors advised retirement so Pucovski researched medical solutions for several months then accepted their recommendation. The health risks from his head injuries made him quit though he hit a century against New South Wales during 2023-24. The player faced extreme pain from retiring even though he had hoped for more.
Pucovski’s first-class career ends with impressive statistics:
- 2,350 runs at an average of 45.19
- Seven centuries, including three double hundreds
