Wheat imports Pakistan have moved into sharper focus after Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired the 7th Meeting of the Steering Committee on Wheat Imports for Food Year 2026-27 in Islamabad. The meeting reviewed national wheat stocks and the progress of supply arrangements.

Wheat Imports Pakistan Review Shows Steady Progress

The first shipment of imported wheat is scheduled to reach the port of Karachi before the end of October 2026. Also, officials expressed satisfaction that adequate supplies have been arranged to match the demand requested by the provinces, which points to careful and timely planning.

Acquisition and Price Stability

Earlier decisions had directed the Trading Corporation of Pakistan to finalize the lowest bids for procuring the remaining 185,000 metric tons of wheat required for Sindh. Competitive bidding also contributes to minimizing the cost of imports and to encouraging transparent procurement.

Dar instructed that newly arriving imported stocks, combined with existing allocations from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation, be deployed to stabilise market prices. Such a step is aimed at easing the burden on consumers and keeping flour affordable for households.

Provincial Coordination and Food Security

The governments of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were urged to complete financial payments promptly and formalise tripartite agreements with the Trading Corporation of Pakistan. Smooth coordination between federal and provincial authorities is essential for moving grain from port to market without delay.

Imports form one part of a wider food security effort. Pakistan’s food security priorities amid climate challenges remain central to planning, while the agreement with Saudi Arabia to raise agricultural and food exports to $3 billion shows the country’s growing strength as a food trading partner. Support has also come through China’s veterinary vaccine assistance, which helps protect livestock.

Consumer protection supports the same goal. The KP Food Safety Authority’s crackdown on adulteration and the Punjab Food Authority’s inspections show that quality standards are being enforced alongside efforts to secure supply.
