PM Shehbaz Sharif is in New York to represent Pakistan at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, placing the country at the heart of a major week of international diplomacy. The Prime Minister is accompanied by a small Pakistani delegation, which includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
The high-level segment of the UN General Assembly is taking place from 22 to 29 September, with the general debate taking place during the first days of the session. The United Nations calendar also confirms that heads of state, heads of government and senior representatives are addressing the Assembly in New York, providing Pakistan with an important platform to present its positions on regional and global matters.
Pakistan To Stress Dialogue, Peaceful Resolution Of Conflicts
Pakistan is likely to convey a strong message on peaceful resolution of conflicts and multilateral cooperation at the 81st UNGA. The Prime Minister will reiterate the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and restraint in resolving disputes, the Foreign Office said, adding that he will also present Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global developments.
The emphasis on diplomacy comes as Pakistan is keen to improve its image as a country that promotes dialogue and de-escalation in a period of heightened global tension. The Prime Minister would also mention Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions and ensure regional peace in his message at the Assembly, the Foreign Office said.
Shehbaz Sharif To Lead Pakistan’s Global Agenda
The Prime Minister’s UNGA agenda is broader than immediate security issues. According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan will highlight sustainable development, climate change, counter-terrorism, Islamophobia, global economic challenges, UN reform and issues affecting the Global South. These themes offer a broad canvas to communicate Pakistan’s development and diplomatic priorities to the international community.
Pakistan has been highlighting the significance of increased international collaboration on climate change risks and sustainable development, so climate change is likely to continue being a key agenda item. The UNGA program itself includes a high-level meeting on the existential threats posed by sea level rise on 24 September, as well as other meetings on development and global challenges.
Jammu And Kashmir And Palestine Are Still Major Issues
Prime Minister’s engagement at the UNGA is also expected to include Pakistan’s long-held position on J&K. The Foreign Office said the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir would be among the issues to be highlighted during the visit apart from the developments on Palestine.
Pakistan has always brought up the issue of self-determination, international law and implementation of relevant UN resolutions in the international fora. The Prime Minister’s presence at the General Assembly, therefore, offers Islamabad yet another chance to highlight these issues to a broad international audience.
