Karachi BRT Yellow Line to Operate Entirely on Electric Buses

Karachi is going green in public transport as the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will be operated with electric buses. “No petrol or diesel engine buses will operate on the route,” Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced during a meeting with a World Bank delegation earlier this week at the project site next to Jam Sadiq Bridge.

The World Bank-funded Yellow Line operating from Dawood Chowrangi in Quaidabad to Numaish will pass through Korangi, Korangi Industrial Area, Main Korangi Road, FTC Interchange, Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, and Kashmir Road, finally merging with the Red Line at Numaish.

“The deputy commissioner and heads of Sindh’s environmental bodies will manage the panellists,” Memon said, “Electric buses only will be on this route. The environment will be affected minimally, and fuel costs are lower, too. Passengers will experience safe, fast, and affordable transport in Karachi.

“I have always focused on environmental initiatives,” he said. Memon stated they were proud of their accomplishments with the first electric bus in Pakistan and the Pink Bus for women under their leadership, and the electric scooter scheme for women, which received over 8,000 applications, was a consideration.

Memon referred to the Yellow Line as a “catalyst for social change,” not just a transit initiative. He also provided updates on the Karachi Circular Railway and the forthcoming Karachi-Sukkur high-speed rail project, suggesting a larger agenda for modernizing urban mobility in Pakistan.
